Please contact anyone whom you would nominate to ensure they are willing to accept the call of this position. Also, please do not nominate someone who is on the active deacons list below.

Deacon Qualifications:

The Deacon

 

  1. A deacon must be born again of the Spirit of God and willing to give his Christian testimony to the Church membership.
  1. Believe that the Bible is the infallible Word of God.
  1. Believe that it is every Christian’s responsibility to be a personal soul-winner, and do his best to be a soul-winner.
  1. Believe that it is the obligation of every Christian to obey the “Great Commission”. (Matthew 28: 19-20)
  1. Believe in and practice tithing as a minimum expression of our love of God through the Church.
  1. Not have any serious domestic troubles, not to be divorced, nor married to a wife that is divorced. (1 Timothy 3:12; Luke 16:18)
  1. He and his wife must know how to hold their tongues against spreading gossip or talking critically about others.
  1. Not be involved in any gambling.
  1. Handle his business affairs in a way that is above reproach.
  1. Not indulge in social drinking nor be in any way addicted to alcohol. A deacon should neither sell, nor be involved in the sales of alcoholic beverages.  He should not serve nor allow alcoholic beverages to be served in his home.
  1. Be in good humor with his Church and its members, with his brother deacons, with the Pastor and will work with them on the basis of frank brotherly love, confidence and cooperation.
  1. Will try to put down murmurings and complainings as he would smother a fire, facing them frankly, dealing with them and stand loyally with the majority of the church in their decision.
  1. He should be willing to serve when service is needed, to the best of his ability. He should be willing to work at an assigned task conscientiously and if he is unable to carry out the assignment, will so indicate and resign the responsibility.  He will resign the Deacon Fellowship if he cannot or will not carry out his responsibilities as an elected deacon.
  1. Will attend the services of his Church, supporting them with his good will, presence, prayers and contributions.
  1. Will keep the observance of the Lord’s Day above reproach.
  1. Will work for enlistment and active advancement in the work of the Church.
  1. Should be an active member of Abilene Baptist Church for at least one year prior to election.
 

The Deacon’s Wife

 

  1. Not a slanderer – She is not to be a false accuser. She must have a careful tongue.  If a deacon should go home and talk to his wife about church problems, she is to be careful not to become a springboard of wrong conversation.
  1. Grave – Stable in character, serious in Christian conduct, a genuineness of truth which attracts the respect of the people in the church.
  1. Sober – This is not just limited to the abstinence from alcoholic beverages, but describes a life well balanced, one which abstains from the hurtful and the harmful. She will carefully cultivate the qualities that God has set forth in Timothy 3:11.
  1. She will be willing to consecrate and contribute to her husband’s work as a deacon. He will have meetings to attend and services to perform as a deacon and she must be willing to give sympathetic and prayerful encouragement as she dedicates her husband to the Lord.
